Jarrow March for Jobs - Sunday 30th October 2011

The first Jarrow March took place in 1936 75 years ago, so it was opportune that the children and grandchildren of the original jarrow marchers (along with other young people who took part) have joined in and recreated the same march to highlight the sad rise in youth unemployment today.

So on Sunday 30th October 2011 at 4:30pm the marchers came in to view and stopped outside the car park at the Wolverton Station to be met by members of the Labour Party, GMB, PCS and Unite Unions.

It was interesting to see a banner from the Stevenage TUC with the marchers, after a lot of loud and enthaustic chanting against the Tory led Government I purchaed a copy of the Jarrow Journal with a donation to the fighting fund, we all walked together from the station to the MADCAP centre next to the Wolverton and Greenleys Town Council Offices, where refeshments were provided, due to more modern times and amenties the marchers were booked into the Ramada Encore Hotel at the Hub in Central Milton Keynes, organised by the Unite Union.

The plan was that the marchers would leave Central Milton Keynes at 10am and make their way towards their next stop to Luton (incidentially the New Statesman magazine published a picture of the marchers in 1936 arriving at Luton.)

I felt honoured to have been there to support these young people, tinged with sadness that 75 years later it was necessary to have to do so again, history really was repeating itself as you may recall in 1936 there was a National Government lead by the Tories!

Postscript: The Marchers arrived in London on Saturday 5th November to deliever a petition to 10, Downing Street.
